At different times in my life, I've struggled finding my own words to pray. I feel like I should just be able to have a conversation with God using my own words, so when that happens, I get frustrated, and sometimes I even get a little bit down on myself. When this happens, I have to ask God to remind me that He gets enormous pleasure showering His graces on humble hearts. So when I do that, when I let God humble me, I'm able to let go of the need to use my own words to pray, and then I have the freedom to just rent the words of someone else.
So what I mean is I'll find a Bible verse or a song or sometimes even the writings of a saint that I feel drawn to really just give voice to the feelings of my soul. And from that, I'm often granted the grace of a new perspective. The words I'm renting in my prayer right now are the words of John the Baptist, "He must increase; I must decrease." I can't tell you the graces that are coming from this simple prayer and the new life that it's breathing into me. So wherever you are on your spiritual journey, maybe it's time to ask God to remind you that He gets enormous pleasure showering His graces on humble hearts.
