Prayers for Lent

Prayers for Lent

Lent is a time of prayer and reflection. It is a time to examine our lives and see what changes we can make to truly become the best-version-of-ourselves - the best spouse, the best parent, the best friend, the best co-worker, the best follower of Jesus. Use these prayers for Lent to reflect on your life and allow God in.

The Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross are a powerful way to reflect on each moment leading up and during Jesus' death. Most Catholic Churches have at least one Stations of the Cross service during Lent, and many have them weekly! Check out your local parish's website for an opportunity near you, or use these reflections on your own!

Lenten Prayer for Ash Wednesday

If you attend an Ash Wednesday Mass, arrive about 10 minutes early. Pray this Ash Wednesday prayer and reflect on how this Lent can be transformative.

God of goodness and mercy,

Hear my prayer as I begin this Lenten journey with you. Let me be honest with myself as I look into my heart and soul, noticing the times I turn away from you. Guide me as I humbly seek to repent and return to your love. May humility guide my efforts to be reconciled with you and live forever in your abundant grace. Transform me this Lent, heavenly Father. Give me the strength to commit myself to grow closer to you each day.

Amen.

Lenten Prayer for Sundays

Take some time to pray this each Sunday of Lent either on your own or as a family. Use it as a way to recommit to having your best Lent ever through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

Heavenly Father,

As I enter another week of my Lenten journey, guide me to the path that leads to you. Fill my heart with gratitude, patience, strength, and peace as I strive to become the-best-version-of-myself, honestly admitting my shortcomings and sins. As I renew my resolve each day to become a better person, let me hear your voice in the deepest reaches of my heart. Give me rest in you.Help me to accept others, showing them your great love instead of casting judgment. Stay with me through the busy days this week and remind me that when I need comfort, solitude, wisdom, or guidance, I can always turn to you. Help me develop discipline and generosity through fasting and almsgiving, and come closer to you through prayer this Lent. In your name I pray,

Amen.

The 7 Sorrows Rosary

As his mother, Mary felt the sufferings of Jesus in a unique way. By reflecting on these moments in Jesus’ life through Mary’s eyes we can experience the immensity of Our Mother’s love and grow in empathy with others who are suffering. The seven sorrows rosary is a great Lenten addition. Arrive about 10 minutes before Mass starts and take some time to pray and reflect on it.

Popular Litanies

In Greek, the word litany means petition. Each line begins with a petition, request for intercession, or praise and is followed by a repetitive response, often “pray for us.” Some are used for public worship during specific Masses, but often they are used during private prayer and devotion. The beautiful requests and repetitive nature of a litany allows one to meditate deeply in prayer. They are also a great way to pray as a group, with one individual leading with each petition and the others providing the response.

The Litany of Humility and the Litany of Trust are two great litanies to incorporate during the Lenten season. Choose one to pray daily or weekly and watch it transform your life.

The Litany of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Amen

Lenten Prayer for Good Friday

Good Friday is a solemn day for Catholics. Spend some time in prayer, ideally at a church, today.

Jesus,

No one knows change better than you. You died on the cross, and three days later you rose from the dead. Forty days later you ascended into heaven and left the world transformed for the rest of time. Help me to transform my soul, to die to sin and death and be reborn in your love and eternal life.

Amen.

Lenten Prayer for Holy Saturday

Jesus,

You are courage incarnate. As you hung on the cross for my sins and the sins of the world, you showed me that all things are possible. You knew that life did not end on the cross. It was only the beginning of a new and glorious eternal life.

Amen.

Lenten Prayer for Easter

Almighty Father,

I thank you for the gift of your son, Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead and redeemed humankind. Fill us with the fire of the Holy Spirit, that we may be faithful disciples and enthusiastic witnesses of our Catholic faith. Alleluia, Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed.

Amen
