Gospel

Mk 10:28-31

Peter began to say to him, “Lo, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first.”

Keep Your Heart Free

Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where we're exploring the genius of Jesus, the genius of the gospels, the genius of Catholicism. By looking at the daily gospel and searching for a word or a phrase or an idea to anchor our day in the gospel through that word, phrase, or idea. Today's reading comes from Mark chapter 10 verses 28 through 31.

Peter began to say to Jesus, "We have left everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sister or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the gospel who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the age to come, eternal life. But many that are first will be last and the last first." What jumps out at you today? I guess it's the idea that I think there's a bit of an examination here to ask, what have we given up to follow Jesus? And what are we willing to give up to follow Jesus? Are we willing to give up a little bit of comfort? Are we willing to be uncomfortable in social settings? Are we willing to be countercultural? Are we willing to give up a bit of that in order to follow Jesus? Are we willing to give up some of our money? Are we willing to give up some of our time, some of our treasures, some of our talents? And how much are we willing to give up in order to follow Jesus? And I can't say how much you should give up and you can't say how much I should give up.

But I think the call is to keep our hearts free for God. And I think we know when our hearts are free, and I think we know when they're not. Have an amazing day. And remember, be bold, be Catholic.
