Gospel

Mt 6:19-23

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Where is Your Treasure?

Hi, I'm Matthew Kelly. Welcome back to Radical and Relevant where we're exploring the genius of Jesus' teachings in the Gospel and each day looking for a word or a phrase or an idea to anchor our days in the Gospels. Today's reading is from the Gospel of Matthew 6:19-23. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness?"
What jumps out at you today? I think for me it's that classic line, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." The things of this world have a way of preoccupying us, of renting space in our minds. And the more things we have, the more things we have to think about, and the less time we have to think about the person who is right in front of us, and of course, God in our spiritual journey. And so it's great to have things. It's great to enjoy things. God gave us the things of this world to enjoy them. But where is your treasure? Do we understand what matters most? And are we treasuring this life above and beyond the next life? And so I think it's good from time to time to have a heart check and say, "Hmm, how am I doing? Has my heart become more earthbound than heaven-bound?" Have an amazing day and remember, do not just be yourself, be the very best version of yourself, all that God created you to be.
