Gospel

Lk 5:33-39

And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” He told them a parable also: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment; if he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, ‘The old is good.’ ”

Discover Your Treasure

Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where each day we're looking for a word, a phrase or an idea from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ to apply to our lives. Today's reading is from Luke 5: 33-39. And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. But yours eat and drink." And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast or the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away, and then they will fast in those days." He told them a parable. "No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilt and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins and no one, after drinking old wine, desires new." For he says, "The old is good."

What is it that jumps out at you today? I think for me, it's those last four words, "The old is good." We live in a society. We live in a culture that thinks new is always better. We live in a culture that thinks that the old and the ancient have nothing to offer - the new and the modern. That isn't true in Rediscover the Rosary and also in Rediscover Catholicism. I talk about the idea that the value of a treasure map doesn't come from whether it's new or old. Whether it's new or old doesn't matter. The value of a treasure map comes from whether or not it leads to treasure. Nobody throws a treasure map away because it's old. The value of a treasure map comes from whether or not it leads to treasure each day. We're reading from the Gospels. Why? Because it's a treasure map. Is it old? Yes. Is it very old? Absolutely. Does it still lead to treasure? No question. Have a great day and remember, Be Bold and Be Catholic.
