“Woe to you, Chora ́zin! woe to you, Beth-sa ́ida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Caper ́na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

Woe to You
Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where each day we take a look at the Gospel to explore the genius, the life and teachings of Jesus, and look for a way to anchor our day in the Gospel. Each day we're looking for a word, a phrase, or an idea that jumps out at you that the Spirit uses to get your attention so that we can have a look at our day, have a look at our life through the lens of the Gospel, through that word, phrase, or idea. Today's reading is from the Gospel of Luke 10:13-16. And Jesus said to them, "Woe to you, Chorazin. And woe to you, Bethsaida. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will be exalted to Heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me. And he who rejects Me rejects the one who sent Me."
What jumps out at you today? It's a short reading and there's a lot of jumping around there. Some woe to you. I think any time Jesus says, "Woe to you," I think to myself, "Okay, I don't want to be on that-- I don't want to be on the receiving end of, 'Woe to you,' ever from Jesus." And imagine what that feels like for Jesus to say, "Woe to you." And of course, he was, and not only to individuals sometimes, scribes and Pharisees, but in this case to whole villages and towns, cities. I think what jumps out at me is the, "woe to you because, you know, we've talked about it before. Anytime Jesus says something more than once in one reading, it always gets my attention.
If Jesus was going to say woe to you, Matthew, what would he be saying woe to me about? And that's my reflection for today. And maybe that's your reflection too. If Jesus was going to say woe to you over something, some part of your life or something that's going on in your life right now, what would he be saying woe to you about?
