Wednesday after Epiphany

Year I

Reading 1

1 Jn 4:11-18

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No man has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his ownSpirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of theworld. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.So we know and believe the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in loveabides in God, and God abides in him. In this is love perfected with us, that we may haveconfidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so are we in this world. There is nofear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he whofears is not perfected in love.

Gospel

Mk 6:45-52

Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side,to Beth-sa´ida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, hewent up into the hills to pray. And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, andhe was alone on the land. And he saw that they were distressed in rowing, for the windwas against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on thesea. He meant to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the sea they thoughtit was a ghost, and cried out; for they all saw him, and were terrified. But immediately hespoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; have no fear.” And he got into the boat withthem and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understandabout the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
