Who is St. Thérèse of Lisieux?
Thérèse of Lisieux is one of the most popular and influential saints in the history of the Catholic Church. Pope Pius X called her “the greatest saint of modern times.” Born to Louis and Zélie Martin in 19th century France, Thérèse grew up in a very faithful household (in fact, both her parents are also saints!). She became a Carmelite nun at the age of 15, joining her older sisters. She died at just 24 years old, and yet her influence was massive.
Known for her love of the ordinary way, the simple way, “The Little Way,” she championed a spirituality that is accessible to people of all ages, regardless of intellectual formation or vocation in life. Her approach to the spiritual life was simple and practical. And this model of holiness is as powerful today as ever before. She inspired other great saints like Mother Teresa and millions of ordinary men and women to do little things with great love. By pouring great love into the smallest acts, Thérèse discovered great joy. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, beautifully displays her gentle soul and her devotion to God’s love and mercy. One of her famous quotes reminds us that holiness is possible: “Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will, and being just what God wants us to be.”
Why is St. Thérèse Called the “Little Flower?”
St. Thérèse is the ultimate example of blooming where you are planted. She has a beautiful reflection at the beginning of Story of a Soul, where she writes: “All the flowers [God] has created are beautiful [...] the splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not take away the perfume of the little violet or the delightful simplicity of the daisy. I understood that if all flowers wanted to be roses, nature would lose her springtime beauty, and the fields would no longer be decked out with little wild flowers. And so it is in the world of souls, Jesus’ garden. He willed to create great souls comparable to lilies and roses, but He has created smaller ones and these must be content to be daisies or violets destined to give joy to God’s glances when He looks down at his feet. Perfection consists in doing His will, in being what He wills us to be.”
Can I Ask St. Thérèse for a Rose?
Many people have asked Thérèse for a rose through her novena, and she has been known to send one, or even the scent of roses! She may send you a rose to let you know she’s heard your prayer, but if you don’t get anything, don’t worry; she is still helping you obtain graces, even if you don’t see a physical sign.

When is the St. Thérèse Novena Typically Prayed?
The novena is traditionally prayed from September 22nd to September 30th, or any time you need St. Thérèse’s intercession, especially as you discern a major decision in life.
What Is St. Thérèse the Patron Saint Of?
- Florists. St. Thérèse said that when she died, she would “let fall a shower of roses” on Earth.
- Foreign Missions. St. Thérèse wanted to reach as many people as possible and share God’s love with them.
- Those With Deceased Parents. When she was four years old, Thérèse lost her mother, St. Zelie Martin. Thérèse’s father, St. Louis Martin, cared for his five daughters after Zelie’s death before he passed away in 1894. Thérèse was 21.
- Priests. St. Thérèse loved praying for priests.
- The Sick. Thérèse contracted tuberculosis at the age of 22, which led to her death at the age of 24.
