January 27 | Genius

Saint Angela Merici

A.D. 1474–1540

Albert Einstein wrote, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

What is your genius?

You may be thinking quietly to yourself that you don't have a genius. You may be tempted to doubt the idea and think that only extraordinary people possess genius. But no, everybody is a genius, and that includes you.

Being a genius isn't about doing something, inventing something, or discovering something. It's about becoming the person God created you to be, and finding the one thing you can do best.

Saint Angela Merici didn’t find her genius through scientific inventions or grand theories. Rather, she discovered what God wanted her to do, and she did it. She discovered what she could do better than anyone else alive, and pursued it with all her heart. And she left the legacy of a genius.

Angela perceived God calling her to found a religious society of women who would live at home and be devoted to educating girls. This idea would have seemed ridiculous at the time, as girls were rarely educated and women were not supposed to serve the Church outside of a convent.

But Angela pursued the idea with all the force of her genius, and founded the Company of St. Ursula in 1535, named after the patron saint of medieval universities. It is the world’s oldest order of consecrated women dedicated to the education of girls.

We all have one thing that we’re uniquely capable of doing, and doing amazingly. What is your one thing? Find that, and you will find your genius. Focus on that, and you will develop your genius.

Embrace your genius, focus on your genius, and share it with the world.

What’s the one thing I can do more excellently than anything else? How would my life change if I focused on that one thing?

I have a genius and I will live it fully.
