The Prophet Jeremiah

B.C. 650–570

How available are you to God right now? 50%? 78%? 100%?

The Prophet Jeremiah made himself 100% available to God—eventually. At first, he had doubts.

In Jeremiah’s own words, this is what happened:

Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you. (Jeremiah 1:4-8)

After hearing these encouraging words from God, Jeremiah made himself 100% available to do what he prayerfully believed God was calling him to do. And amazing things happened. Holy Moments happened.

It wasn’t always easy for Jeremiah. Actually, it was usually very, very difficult. He foretold the Israelites of their coming defeat and exile. He was ridiculed by his own people, thrown in a well, and eventually killed. He became known as the “Weeping Prophet.”

But because he made himself available, God did amazing things through him. Jeremiah’s actions and words told of something much greater to come. They told of Jesus. They told of the New Covenant that would transform the world. (Jeremiah 31:32; see Hebrews 10:16)

When we make ourselves available to God amazing things happen. Throughout history God has collaborated with the most unlikely people to make amazing things happen.

God almost never chooses the most qualified person, he almost never chooses people in positions of power and authority, and he often chooses the people nobody would expect. This has led me to wonder what criteria God uses to select the people he is going to collaborate with powerfully. I reached the conclusion many years ago that he uses only one criterion.

God chooses the people who make themselves available to him. He does not see your past as an impediment to your future. If you want to see miracles, make yourself available to God. If you want to collaborate with God to create Holy Moments, make yourself available to God.

HOW AVAILABLE AM I TO GOD OUT OF 100 PERCENT? WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP TO INCREASE THAT PERCENTAGE?

God, I make myself 100% available to you.

This reflection is brought to you from book title.
