August 19 | Collaborating with God
A.D. 1601–1680
When we think about collaboration, we often think of people working together to achieve something great. But what about collaborating with God?
Saint John Eudes, a remarkable figure from the 17th century, shows us just how powerful this collaboration can be.
Born on November 14, 1601, in Ri, France, John Eudes grew up immersed in the faith, thanks to his devout parents. Ordained as a priest at the age of 24, he didn’t wait for the perfect moment or ideal circumstances to start his mission. Instead, he made himself available to God, traveling from village to village, preaching with passion and addressing the needs of those who had been neglected for far too long.
John Eudes understood that to revitalize the Church, well-formed clergy were essential. So, in 1643, he founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, commonly known as the Eudists. This congregation was dedicated to the holistic education of priests, ensuring they were well-prepared to guide their communities. By focusing on the formation of holy priests, John Eudes was not just doing God’s work; he was collaborating with God to build a foundation for future generations.
But John Eudes didn’t stop there. He was acutely aware of the social issues of his time and felt a deep call to address them. He founded the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge, an order dedicated to caring for women in need, particularly those who had been marginalized or exploited. His work with these women was a tangible expression of the Gospel’s call to love and serve the least among us.
Saint John Eudes passed away on August 19, 1680. His life is a powerful reminder that when we make ourselves available to God, we can collaborate with him in wonderful ways.
For thousands of years God has been using ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
God delights in dynamic collaboration with humanity. He doesn't necessarily choose the people who are the best educated or who are good-looking; he doesn't choose people because they are in positions of power and authority; he doesn't always choose the most eloquent and persuasive. There is only one type of person God has used powerfully throughout history: He does incredible things with the people who make themselves available to him; it is the prerequisite for mission.
How can you collaborate with God today? How can you make yourself available to him and participate in his divine plans?
HOW CAN I MAKE MYSELF AVAILABLE TO GOD TODAY?
I will make myself available to God today.
