September 15 | I Am The Way
A.D. 1447–1510
Are you where you want to be?
The world says there are many ways to get wherever it is you want to go. The world says chart your own course, make your own way. The world says you are the master of your journey. The world makes it sound easy and enjoyable. Jesus disagrees.
Jesus says, “I am the Way.” (John 14:6)
Saint Catherine of Genoa is known for her mystical relationship with Jesus. But even she once wandered from the Way and had to rediscover how to follow Jesus.
As young as 13 years old, Catherine wanted to become a nun, but she was denied because of her age. Three years later, her family arranged for her to be married. Unfortunately, Catherine’s husband treated her poorly and made her life miserable. The next decade of Catherine’s life was spiritually dry as she tried to cope with her husband’s violence and infidelity. She became depressed and turned to worldly distractions. She was lost and frustrated.
Then something incredible happened. Catherine, dejected by her lot in life, visited her sister at a convent in Genoa. Her sister’s advice? Turn to Jesus in the sacraments. So Catherine dragged herself to the confessional and, in that tiny wooden room, her entire life changed. She was granted a Divine vision that made two things clear: the weight of her sins but also the immensity of God’s love for her.
From that moment on, Catherine knew that she must abandon her way and follow Jesus, declaring “No more world, no more sin.” Receiving Communion became her daily habit, and her prayerful example of faith grew so powerful that her husband also renounced his sins. Together, they devoted their lives to caring for the sick.
We live in a world full of people who are lost and pretending they are not. Sometimes we are one of those people. And to some extent we are all lost and need to be found all over again.
Jesus says, “I am the Way.” He is the way from darkness to light, from anxiety to peace, from dissatisfaction to fulfillment, from death to life, from meaninglessness to purpose, from nothingness to everything that matters.
So, will you follow your way or the Way?
IS THAT PATH THAT I AM ON TAKING ME WHERE I WANT TO GO? HOW AM I FOLLOWING MY WAY INSTEAD OF JESUS, THE ONE TRUE WAY?
I will follow Jesus, the one true Way.
