October 18 | A Unique Perspective
First Century
God is infinite. Have you ever stopped and tried to grasp what that means? It means that there are infinite things to know about Him. It means there are infinite ways to have a relationship with him, to know Him. Each and every one of us has a unique perspective on God. What’s your unique perspective?
Luke the Evangelist had an incredibly unique perspective on the faith. He is best known for writing the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. But what many people don’t know is that he never actually met Jesus. Instead, he reported what he learned from the people who knew Jesus, who witnessed His life firsthand. Luke was a physician, a healer, and a well-educated man. Because of this, his Gospel reads differently from Matthew, Mark, and John’s. He offers us his unique perspective on the life of Jesus.
One of the most unique and interesting things that Luke focuses on throughout his Gospel is Mary. There are many moments with Mary that are only recorded in Luke’s Gospel—it’s like Luke saw the unique perspective of Mary and wanted the world to know the things that only she could share.
Nobody sees the life of a child the way that child’s mother does—not even the father. This is Mary’s perspective of Jesus’ life. She has a unique perspective. It seems to me that every genuine Christian, not just Catholics, should be interested in that perspective—and not just interested, but fascinated. Through Luke’s writings, we are given a special opportunity to ponder the life of Jesus through the eyes of His mother. This is an incredibly powerful experience if we enter into it fully.
Because Luke paid attention to unique perspectives in his writings, we get to know more and more about our infinite God. When’s the last time you thought about your unique perspective of God?
