November 25 | The Only Real Sadness
A.D. 287–305
What is your dream for your life?
Catherine of Alexandria had her entire life ahead of her. She wasn’t just a noble princess, she was also a scholar well known for her intellect. But then she made a mistake in the eyes of the world—she became a Christian. Catherine was deeply in love with her faith and in just a few short years, she converted hundreds of people. But it all came to an abrupt end when she was martyred at the age of 18.
Catherine was so young, she had so much to offer the world, and it is impossible to calculate how many people she could have converted if she only had more time. By any account, her death was a tragedy. But it wasn’t a tragedy to Catherine. And it shouldn’t be a tragedy to us as Christians. Why? Because Catherine knew a powerful truth. In the words of French novelist Léon Bloy: “The only real sadness, the only real failure, the only great tragedy in life, is not to become a saint.”
Do you believe the same is true in your own life?
It is time to reorient ourselves. We have allowed ourselves to become hypnotized by the complexities of the modern world. Our faith is simple and beautiful. And it is possible to live it out in new and exciting ways, here and now, in our times. Your personality and circumstances, your needs, talents, and desires, are all gifts to help you live the faith in a deeply personal way.
Holiness is simply the application of the values, principles, and spirit of the Gospel to the circumstances of our everyday lives, one moment at a time. It isn’t complicated. It is disarmingly simple.
A new kind of holiness is needed. One that confounds expectations. A new breed of saints. Brave men and women who wholeheartedly embrace the life and teachings of Jesus and live them out creatively. And here is the good news: Holiness is possible. Anyone who tells
you otherwise is confused or a liar, but either way they are absolutely and completely wrong.
Holiness is possible for you. One moment at a time. Set yourself to the task of creating Holy Moments. Don’t trouble your heart, mind, and soul with the burden of living a holy life. Each life is a collection of moments. Grasp those moments.
You were made for another world. And if you spend all of your time here on earth living for this world alone, you will never be happy. The only true path to happiness is by following the deepest desire God has placed in your heart: a life of holiness.
Are you ready to begin?
HOW WILL YOU GROW IN HOLINESS TODAY?
I will pursue holiness, one moment at a time.
This reflection is brought to you from book title.
