Welcome to Lovers of Wisdom. Christmas is glorious. Ready, set, go!
Keep the main thing, the main thing. It's a simple idea, but in a world of infinite distraction and opportunity, it is disturbingly difficult to keep the main thing, the main thing. And it is impossible if we are not clear about what the main thing is to begin with. Welcome back to Best Christmas Ever, where we are exploring 28 ways to make this your best Christmas ever. Number four is keep the main thing, the main thing. What you choose to focus on is so important in life. It's important in your career, in your personal finances, in your health, in your marriage and parenting, in your spirituality, and in every other aspect of life. Focus. This is one of the most powerful tools you possess. Whatever you choose to focus on will determine everything. This is true at every stage of life, and it is true during Advent and Christmas.
Choose to focus on everything being perfect, and you will drive yourself crazy, and Christmas will be your most anxious and stressful Christmas ever. Focus on Jesus, and that will determine everything. As we journey toward Christmas, think of Peter getting out of the boat and walking on the water towards Jesus. He was walking on water until he took his eyes off Jesus. Then, he began to sink. The same is true for you and me. Jesus is the main thing. Well, he's, obviously, not a thing, but in the context of keeping the main thing, the main thing, you know what I mean. And if Jesus is the main thing, the color of the napkins is not the main thing. If everyone can come to your Christmas dinner, is not the main thing. What we eat is not the main thing. The perfect gift is not the main thing. Whether or not the Christmas tree is too large or too small is not the main thing. This Christmas, keep your eyes on Jesus. Keeping the main thing, the main thing, makes life a lot simpler. And with that simplicity comes lightheartedness. And lightheartedness is a sign of the spiritual childhood we should all aspire to at Christmas.
Are you excited for your best Christmas ever? I know I am. But before you go, let's talk about how to avoid your worst Christmas ever.
It's not easy to have a great Christmas in a world where everyone is striving for what isn't worth having. Welcome back to 28 obstacles that will prevent you from having your best Christmas ever. Obstacle number four is the wrong content. The content you consume has an enormous impact on your life, your relationships, and your soul. Are the movies and television shows you watch, the things you read, the music you listen to, and the conversations you have, helping you become the best version of yourself? If not, they are dragging you down and they will be an obstacle to having your best Christmas ever. Pay attention to the content you choose to consume between now and Christmas.
I used to say we become the books we read, and it is still true. But we are also becoming the TV shows we watch. Look around society and you will see that this is true. But remember, find your joy, guard your joy, follow your joy, not just happiness. It seems our culture has confused happiness with comfort. And following comfort will lead you to misery. Find your joy. Cherish your joy. Guard your joy and follow your joy.
There are people who say they have no regrets. I am not one of them. If I could go back and live my life all over again, there are things I would change. One thing I would change is the speed at which I have lived my life. I would slow my life down and not just a little. For the last five years, I have been learning to slow down to the speed of joy. It hasn't been easy, but the fruits are undeniable and the lessons monumental. I wrote slowing down to the speed of joy to share those lessons with you and to help you banish urgent and busy from your life. This one idea will change your life in ways you can't even imagine.
