Rowing Against the Wind

3 min

Gospel

Mk 6:45-52

Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Beth-sa′ida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up into the hills to pray. And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. And he saw that they were distressed in rowing, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out; for they all saw him, and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; have no fear.” And he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

It’s time to take back your life.

It’s time to slow down to the speed of joy.

All revolutions have a moment when they begin. This is your moment.

Rowing Against the Wind

What is it that jumps out at you today? What jumped out at me was just this little line, "For the wind was against them." So you think about the disciples out there. They're rowing. There's a storm. Wind is against them. And they're rowing against the wind. You think about how difficult that is. Are you rowing against the wind right now? Is there some situation in your life that has you rowing against the wind? And if you're not, are you aware of people around you that are dealing with that? They've got some situation. They're just rowing against the wind, just trying to get through the day. And how can we help them in their efforts to row against the wind? And how can we bring what Jesus brought? He brought this great calm. He brought this great calm. And maybe if you're rowing against the wind, how is Jesus trying to bring that great calm to whatever that situation is in your life?

Or if it's somebody else that's got that situation, how can you bring the calm of Jesus to that person and into that situation? And so we think about Jesus' presence has this great calming effect. We talk about slowing down the speed of joy. Jesus was never in a hurry. Never in a hurry. He never rushed anything. He had this great, calming presence. How can we become that presence in this world that desperately needs it? Have a great day, and remember, Be Bold, Be Catholic.
