Gospel

Mk 4:21-25

And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For there is nothing hid, except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.” And he said to them, “Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Don’t Hide Your Light!

Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where each day we explore the genius of our faith in the life and teachings of Jesus. We listen to the gospel of the day, allow God to speak to us through the gospel of the day, and we're listening for a word or a phrase or an idea that the Holy Spirit uses to capture our attention. Today's reading is from the Gospel of Mark 4:21-25. "And Jesus said to them, 'Is a lamp brought in and put under a bushel or under a bed and not on a stand? For there is nothing hid except to be made manifest, nor is anything secret except to come to light. If any man has ears, let him hear.' And he said to them, 'Take heed what you hear. The measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. For to him who has will more be given, and for him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.'"

What jumps out at you today? Is there a word? Is there a phrase or idea? Jesus is talking about light. Jesus loves the analogy of light. He uses it throughout the gospels and the contrast between light and dark. And today he says, "You don't bring it in and put it under a bushel." And in Matthew's gospel, we have that great line, "Let your light shine." And so maybe the call today is to ask, okay, in what ways are you hiding under the bushel? In what ways are you hiding your talents or your abilities under the bushel? Or what are you hiding under the bushel? Because his next line is that whatever is hidden will be made manifest. And so what are you hiding under the bushel? What are you hiding? And why are you hiding it? And who is that hurting? Who is that helping? How is that hurting you? Is it really helping you? You probably do it because you think it's helping you. But is it really helping you? What are you hiding? And why are you hiding it? Let's think on that as we make our way through the day. Have a great day. Remember, don't just be yourself. Be the very-best-version-of-yourself, all that God created you to be.
