Gospel

Mk 9:30-37

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him.

And they came to Caper´na-um; and when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they were silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, “If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” And he took a child, and put him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

What Are You Missing?

Welcome back to Radical & Relevant, where each day we explore the genius of the gospel, the genius of Jesus, the genius of Christianity, Catholicism. We're reflecting on the gospel of the day together. Today's reading comes from the Gospel of Mark 9:30-37. "They went on from there and passed through Galilee, and He would not have anyone know it. For He was teaching His disciples, saying to them, 'The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days, he will rise.' But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask Him. And they came to Capernaum, and when He was in the house, he asked them, 'What were you discussing along the way?' But they were silent, for on the way, they were discussing with one another who was the greatest. And He sat down and called the 12, and He said to them, 'If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.' And He took a child and put him in their midst. And taking him in His arms, He said to them, 'Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me, but He who sent me.'"

So again, we've got two pieces to this reading today. In the first piece, Jesus is taking the disciples away. He doesn't want to know anyone-- He doesn't want anyone to know where they are because He wants to speak specifically to the disciples about the fact that He's going to be seized by men, and they're going to beat Him, and they're going to kill Him. And three days later, He's going to rise from the dead. And He wanted to speak to them and just them about that. And they still don't get it. So what do we see? We see Jesus repeating this message over and over. He's trying to awaken their consciousness to this reality. What's He trying to awaken your consciousness to? What are you not getting? We see it over and over in the gospels. Jesus is trying to get message through to the disciples. They're not getting it. We probably think to ourselves, "These guys, I mean, they're just not getting it." Yeah, because we've got hindsight, right? But what are you not getting?

What message is God trying to get through to you right now? You're just not getting it. He keeps trying to get the message through and you keep not getting it. How can you open your heart, your mind, your spirit to whatever that message is that God is trying to deliver to you? Have a great day, and remember, Be Bold, Be Catholic.

I hope you're enjoying the daily gospel reflections. So one of the things I love doing, spending this time with you each day. Recently, I released a book called 33 Days to Divine Mercy. If you haven't had a chance to check that out yet, I encourage you to do that today.
