Lk 17:5-10
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, ‘Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
“Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”

Mustard Seed Faith
So you got these two pieces here in this reading. What word, phrase, idea did the Holy Spirit draw your attention to? Was it the first part, disciples coming, asking, "Lord, increase our faith"? Jesus talked about faith of the mustard seed. I'm sure the disciples felt great after being told that this little faith could produce these miracles. Or maybe the Holy Spirit drew your attention to the second part of the reading and the parable of the landowner with the servant and who's helping who and our worthiness and our duty. For me, what jumped out was the words of the apostles. The reading starts, "The apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith.'" So many of the prayers that I use throughout my day are these prayers that are spoken to Jesus, because when the apostles come to Jesus and say, "Lord, increase our faith," that is a prayer. Was He there? Yes. Was He standing right before them? Absolutely. Were they speaking to Him? Yes. Was it a conversation? Absolutely. Was it a prayer? No doubt.
In a way, it teaches us how to pray. It teaches us to pray as if Jesus is sitting right there, and we're talking to Him just like we talk to a friend. But the apostles say to Jesus, "Lord, increase our faith," and it's a beautiful prayer. Right? It's a beautiful plea. It's a beautiful request that they come to Him, and I feel like never have I prayed that prayer and God not answered that prayer. And so I challenge you today, when is the last time you asked God to give you more faith? When is the last time you asked God to heap faith upon you, to fill your heart to overflowing with faith? And whether that was yesterday or a hundred years ago, I encourage you to let that be your prayer today. Join with the apostles, saying to Jesus, "Lord, increase our faith."
