Rethink the Our Father

Gospel

Lk 11:1-4

He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation.”

It’s time to take back your life.

It’s time to slow down to the speed of joy.

All revolutions have a moment when they begin. This is your moment.

Rethink the Our Father

What is it that jumps out at you? Jesus was praying. It was a quiet place. His disciples waited until he was finished.

And they have this request, which is the request we all make of God, we all make of the church in every age. Lord, teach us to pray. And then Jesus gives them the Our Father. Many of the saints talk about the idea that if we really understood how profound, mystical, and intimate, the Our Father was, we wouldn't be able to get through it without just breaking down in tears. The idea of God as our Father is radical. If you look at religions for tens of thousands of years, God was never intimate with people.

God was distant, God was angry, God was unpredictable, God was far off and far above all things human. So the idea of God as a father and that intimacy is overwhelming if we really start to think of it, and especially if we think of it in a historical context. Jesus taught them to pray. He taught them the Our Father. And obviously, the different gospels have different versions, and it's a fairly short version here in Luke. But my challenge to you today is to take the Our Father, and to pray through the Our Father, and to think about which line is God most calling you to consider today?

Which line or phrase of the Our Father is God most calling you to consider today? Have a great day. Remember, don't just be yourself, any version of yourself, be all that God created you to be, the-very-best-version-of-yourself.
