Gospel
Lk 12:54-59
He also said to the multitudes, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper.”

Do You See the Signs?
Welcome back to Radical and Relevant. I'm Matthew Kelly, and each day we take a few moments together to read the gospel, to reflect on the gospel, and to try and mine a word or a phrase or an idea that the Spirit uses to catch our attention and to go deep into that word, phrase or idea, so that we can live the gospel out more fully with every passing day. Today's reading is, again, from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 12, and the last several days we've been making our way through chapter 12 of Luke. It might be a great exercise to go back in the next day or so and just read the whole chapter.
We've been taking it piece by piece each day. Might make sense to read the whole chapter. It'd be a great spiritual exercise during your prayer time. But today is Luke 12 verses 54 to 59. "Jesus said to the multitudes, 'When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say it once, a shower is coming. And so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say there will be scorching heat and it happens. You hypocrites. You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky. But why do you not know how to interpret the present time? And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge and the judge hand you over to the officer and the officer put you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper.'" What jumps out at you today? It's sort of two readings in one, right? We've got this. The first one is, learn how to see the signs. And the second one is about settling with your neighbor before you get to court. And there's some really practical wisdom in here. And of course, there's some spiritual wisdom.
But what signs are you seeing in your life at the moment? Jesus says, "Okay. You see the clouds coming. You know it's going to rain." What clouds are coming in your life at the moment? What wind is blowing or preparing to gust in your life at the moment? And what are you doing about it? Sometimes we like to avoid things, right? A lot of people are avoidant of conflict. I don't love conflict myself. I like probably a bit avoidant of conflict myself. I sort of hope things will sort of work themselves out, but things rarely work themselves out, right? We have to work them out. We have to step up. We have to be courageous. We have to have those crucial conversations. But what clouds are coming in your life right now? What are you doing about them? Are you pretending they're not there? That isn't going to work. Are you praying about it? You're asking God, "God, I see the clouds coming. What should I do?" Let that be our prayer today. Have a great day, and remember, Be Bold, Be Catholic.
