Do You Know Better than God?

Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where each day we explore the genius of Jesus in the Gospels. Today's reading is from the Gospel of Matthew chapter nine, verses 27 through 31. As Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." And when Jesus entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" And they said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith, be it done to you," and their eyes were opened, and Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it," but they went away and spread his fame through all the district. You know better than God? Do you ever think to yourself, you know better than God? When we think about it in those terms, the answer is no, right? We think, do I know better than God? Of course, I don't know better than God. But we often act as if we know better than God. And this is what we see with the blind men today. Jesus asked them, "Don't tell anybody." And what's the last reading? But they went away and spread his fame through all the district. Well, you think about that, right? He's just cured their blindness.

He's just restored their sight. He's made a simple request, and they've gone directly against his request. How does that make you feel about the blind men? What sort of feelings do you have towards them? You could probably come up with some-- if you really did like an active meditation on that, you'd probably come up with some pretty negative feelings towards these blind men. The blind men were essentially saying to Jesus, "We know better than you God. We know you said this other thing over here, God, not to tell anybody, but we know better than you, God, and we're going to tell everybody." And it's a fascinating case study for us to look at and to ask ourselves, in what area of our lives are we telling God that we know better than Him? What area of our lives are we acting as if we know better than God? Have an amazing day. And remember, Be Bold, Be Catholic.
