Lk 21:34-36
“But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man.”

The Weight in Your Heart
So it's a short one today.
Sometimes priest stands up, read the gospel of the deacon on Sunday and you get
distracted by something. If it's a short one, it can be gone. You can miss it. And as we
do, listen for a word or phrase or an idea, I think what jumps out at me today is this
phrase, "The cares of this life." And the phrase before that, "Lest your hearts be
weighed down. Lest your hearts be weighed down by the cares of this
life."
Other things as well, but that's what struck me because I
think it is easy for us to get caught up in the things of this world, the cares of this
life, and they do weigh our hearts down. Sometimes with astounding ease. Something can
come upon you or you can find yourself in a situation and your heart can be weighed down
so quickly by the things of this world. And so as you make your way through the day,
think about it. What's weighing your heart down? What are the moments in your day where
your heart feels weighed down? And what are the moments in the day when you feel
buoyant, where there's like a buoyancy in your heart, there's a buoyancy of spirit in
your life. And what's happening in those moments where your heart's being weighed down,
and what's happening in those moments where you have this spiritual buoyancy? And who
are the people around you in those moments when your heart is being weighed down? And
who are the people around you when you had this beautiful spiritual
buoyancy?
And then, the big one. What impact do you have on other
people? Does your presence cause people's hearts to be weighed now? Or does your
presence bring a buoyancy to people's hearts? Are you a messenger, an ambassador of that
spiritual buoyancy? Do you bring that with your presence into other people's lives? Have
a great day, and remember, Be Bold, Be Catholic.
