Mt 14:1-12
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus; and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist, he has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.” For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison, for the sake of Hero′di-as, his brother Philip’s wife; because John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Hero′di-as danced before the company, and pleased Herod, so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given; he sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.

An Enormous Injustice
Is there a word or a phrase or an idea that jumps out at you today? We have here the a great prophet losing his life because of the whims of a teenager and her mother.
The magnitude of the injustice, the tragedy of the situation, and Herod's inability to stand up to the teenager and say, No.
Because afraid of being embarrassed in front of his guests or whatever that is, and that situation, that emotion, or that fear we all experience, right? Okay, hopefully I'm not going to have anyone beheaded, but we all experience this, this fear of being embarrassed in front of other people. We all have this desire to be held in good esteem by others. And these things can become major obstacles to living the gospel, to laying down our lives for what God is calling us to. And so the question that jumps out at me today is. What is God calling you to today? Very often, I think we think of call as this one big call in our life. But to be Christian is to be called and it's to be called on a daily basis and it's to be called in every situation, in every circumstance to behave, to act. To live in a certain way. And so as we go out into the world today, we're encounter lots of different people, lots of different situations, lots of different circumstances, and to realize that we are called in each one of those in a unique way to behave, to act, to love, to lead, to encourage, to challenge.
Cold. Always cold. In every moment, in every situation. It's a beautiful thing, but it's a challenging thing. Let's go out the world today and live as a person who is cold. God bless you. Have a great day. And remember, Be Bold. Be Catholic.
