Pay Attention to Your Ego

Gospel

Mt 18:1-5, 10

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me;

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

It’s time to take back your life.

It’s time to slow down to the speed of joy.

All revolutions have a moment when they begin. This is your moment.

Pay Attention to Your Ego

What is it that jumps out at you today? It's this beautiful humanity of the disciples, right? They want to know who the greatest is. You know, it doesn't matter what domain you occupy in this world, everyone wants to know who the greatest is. Everyone wants to know who was the greatest of all time. It could be art, it could be football, it could be anything. Who's the greatest?

Something about our humanity wants to know who is the greatest. And of course, some part of our humanity also wants to be the greatest. And Jesus, as always, he just turns it on its head, right? He said, "If you want to be great, be like little children." And his call, again, is a call to a radical humility.

And then the line, the famous line, "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Let's look for opportunities to humble ourselves as we go through the day today. But let's also focus in, like, on a spiritual intelligence. You know, we've got academic intelligence, IQ.

We've got emotional intelligence, EQ. And we've got spiritual intelligence, SQ. Let's focus in on this spiritual intelligence. One aspect of it is an awareness of, as we're going through the day, what is our ego chomping at the bit to do? Is the ego in conversations, is the ego chomping at the bit to drop a name? Is the ego chomping at the bit to be the most knowledgeable?

Is the ego chomping at the bit to get the invite or be close to this person or that other person? Let's start to pay attention to what is the ego doing so that we can humble ourselves like the little children. Have a great day. And remember, Be Bold. Be Catholic.
