Gospel

Mt 6:1-6, 16-18

“Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

“Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

It’s time to take back your life.

It’s time to slow down to the speed of joy.

All revolutions have a moment when they begin. This is your moment.

Your Single Purpose

What is it that jumps out at you today? Jesus is talking about these common practices of the spiritual life and he's juxtaposing these two realities. A group of people who let everyone know what they're doing and a person who keeps the focus. Not on what everyone else is thinking about them but on the God of the universe and And that's one of the main reasons Jesus calls us to this is because he wants us to have Singleness of purpose he wants us to have wholeheartedness Okay, when if I'm doing something I'm thinking oh, I wonder what those people think I wonder what those people thinking and I hope those people think good about me and my mind is everywhere, right? And my heart is divided in many, many, many ways. What is God saying? He's saying, no divided heart, come with a whole heart, pray wholeheartedly, fast wholeheartedly, keep your focus on the Creator, on the one true God.

So let's go out in the world today and think about this. Oneness, this wholeheartedness, this singleness of purpose. And let's think about, okay, what is it I'm called to do right now? And let's focus on that. If that's prayer, let's pray. If that's mowing the lawn, let's mow the lawn. If that's doing our work, let's do our work. If that's taking care of babies, let's take care of babies. Whatever that is, let's have that singleness of purpose. Let's have a wholeheartedness. In that because it's that wholeheartedness that God is trying to teach us. He's trying to teach it to us when we're in prayer, of course, but he's also trying to teach it to us when we're mowing the lawn, when we're doing our work, when we're doing this. And of course we live in a world of massive distraction.

We live in a world of constant notifications. We live in a world where we're constantly being drawn in different directions. All of this takes us away from that wholeheartedness that we were created for. Love the Lord your God with your whole heart. Your whole mind, your whole soul, your whole being. Wholeness of heart is what God wants from us. Let's go out of the world today and practice that. Let's notice, okay, am I give my whole heart to this? This or am I like distracted all over the place? Give our whole heart. Let's train, practice to give our whole heart to God. Have a great day and remember, Be bold. Be Catholic.
