What is Devotion to the Sacred Heart?
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Jesus himself—specifically his heart, which is overwhelmed with love and mercy for God and all mankind.
Pope Pius XII put it this way, “The Heart of the Incarnate Word is deservedly and rightly considered the chief sign and symbol of that…love with which the divine Redeemer unceasingly loves his eternal Father and all mankind.”
History of the Devotion
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690) was a French Visitation nun who experienced visions of Jesus. During these visions, Jesus spoke to her about his Sacred Heart as a symbol of his love and mercy for humanity.
Jesus expressed his desire for humanity to draw closer to his heart, particularly through Eucharistic devotion and reparation for sins. This led Pope Pius IX to institute of the Feast of the Sacred Heart on the Friday following Corpus Christi.
The Catholic Church has both approved and recommended devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a way to grow deeper in faith and experience God’s mercy anew.
Connection to Divine Mercy
The connections between Devotion to the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy are striking and profound. Nearly 300 years after Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, he appeared to another humble nun, Sister Faustina Kowalska, to express his desire that his mercy be shared with the world.
Saint Catherine of Siena provides an image that can help us understand the connection between these two great devotions. She says that the love that flows from God’s heart always crosses a bridge of mercy in order to reach the world. The Sacred Heart devotion encourages us to reflect on the love that overwhelms Jesus’ heart. The Divine Mercy devotion encourages us to reflect on how that love reaches out to us in our misery.
The Sacred Heart Prayer by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque
Lord Jesus,
Let my heart never rest until it finds You, who are its center, its love, and its happiness. By the wound in Your heart, pardon the sins that I have committed whether out of malice or out of evil desires. Place my weak heart in your own divine heart, continually under your protection and guidance, so that I may persevere in doing good and in fleeing evil until my last breath.
Amen.
Common Sacred Heart Devotional Practices
The Sacred Heart Devotion has led generations of Catholics to a deeper understanding of God’s unconditional love and abundant mercy. There are many ways you can make this devotion a greater part of your spiritual life:
- Celebrate First Fridays. On the first Friday of the month, for nine consecutive months, go to Confession and receive the Eucharist. Because of the power of this special devotion, many parishes host First Friday Masses and Confessions.
- Celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart. This special feast day is celebrated on the Friday after the feast of Corpus Christi. You can celebrate by attending Mass, receiving the Eucharist, and spending time in prayer, meditating on the Sacred Heart.
- Celebrate the Month of the Sacred Heart. The Church has dedicated the entire month of June to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This is the perfect time to deepen your spiritual life and devotion to the Sacred Heart.
- Enthrone an image of the Sacred Heart in your home. When Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary, he said: “I will bless every dwelling where an image of My Heart is both exposed and honored.” During an enthronement ceremony, a priest (ideally) will lead a small ceremony in your home where an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is placed somewhere prominent. The home, the image, and the family are all blessed. If you want to learn more about enthronement, speak to your parish priest!
Promises of the Sacred Heart Devotion
Jesus made many promises to those who have devotion to his Sacred Heart:
- “I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.”
- “I will establish peace in their homes.”
- “I will comfort them in all their afflictions.”
- “I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.”
- “I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.”
- “Sinners will find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.”
- “Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.”
- “Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.”
- “I will bless every place in which an image of my Heart is exposed and honored.”
- “I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.”
- “Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in my Heart.”
- “I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. My divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”
If you want to gain access to these promises, try to make the Sacred Heart Devotion a larger part of your life. How? You can start by praying the Sacred Heart Novena now!
