Luke 10:25-37

A scholar of the law stood up to test Jesus and asked him what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus asked him what was written in the law and how he understood it. The scholar replied that one must love the Lord with all their heart, being, strength, and mind, and love their neighbor as themselves. Jesus told him he had answered correctly and that if he did this, he would live.

But the scholar, wanting to justify himself, asked Jesus who his neighbor was. Jesus told a story: A man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho fell victim to robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and left him half-dead. A priest came by, saw him, and passed on the opposite side. A Levite did the same. But a Samaritan traveler saw the man, was moved with compassion, and approached him. He treated his wounds with oil and wine, bandaged them, put him on his own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him. The next day, he gave the innkeeper two silver coins and instructed him to take care of the man, promising to repay any additional costs on his return.

Jesus then asked the scholar which of the three had been a neighbor to the man who fell victim to the robbers. The scholar answered, "The one who treated him with mercy." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."
