Matthew 3:1-12

John the Baptist appeared preaching in the desert of Judea and saying that the kingdom of heaven was at hand and that the people should repent. He was the one spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, a voice crying out in the desert to prepare the way of the Lord and make his paths straight. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. People from Jerusalem, all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, he called them a brood of vipers and asked who had warned them to flee from the coming wrath. He urged them to produce good fruit as evidence of their repentance and not to presume that having Abraham as their father was enough, reminding them that God could raise up children to Abraham from stones. He warned that the axe already lay at the root of the trees and that any tree not bearing good fruit would be cut down and thrown into the fire. John said he baptized with water for repentance, but one mightier than he was coming, one whose sandals he was not worthy to carry. That one would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. With a winnowing fan in his hand, he would clear his threshing floor, gather the wheat into his barn, and burn the chaff with unquenchable fire.
