Welcome back to Best Advent Ever. The back of the book says, "Joy erupts within us when we allow an experience to touch the very depths of our soul." Advent is a period of preparation. It is an experience that can touch the very depths of our soul, and an experience that prepares us so that Christmas can touch the very depths of our soul. I asked the question earlier. I asked the question again. When is the last time you allowed an experience to touch the very depths of your soul? Leisure is one of the things that helps us, opens us, expands our capacity so that we can fully experience things and wholeheartedly give ourselves to God, to the activities we're called to, and to the people God invites us to love. But what we very quickly discover is the hardest thing in the world to do is nothing. The biggest challenge to honoring the Sabbath is what surprises many. Work is easier than leisure. That's right. It's much easier to work more than to slow down and learn how to practice Sabbath. One reason is because we know how to work. It's comfortable. Whereas we need to learn how to practice Sabbath. Leisure requires two very specific disciplines and two very specific virtues. The first discipline leisure requires is one that we are unaccustomed to because we live immersed in a culture addicted to activity. Leisure requires that we learn to do nothing, and most people are horrible at doing nothing. The second discipline leisure requires, we are also unaccustomed to because our culture worships measurable results. Leisure requires that we learn to enjoy doing things just for the joy of it, and not because of the outcome it may produce, just for the joy of it. Humility and patience are the two specific virtues leisure requires of us. Humility, to let go, surrender, and receive. Patience, to learn to appreciate simplicity, to practice activities that are not productivity-focused, and to cultivate inner peace and outer calm. Inner peace and outer calm. Are you a shelter from the storm for the people in your life? Or are you the storm? Think about that. Are you a shelter from the storm of life for the people in your life? Or are you the storm in their life? Are you just adding to the storm of the world that beats up against them every day? The Sabbath fosters inner peace and outer calm so that we can be that shelter from the storm for the people in our lives.
