Welcome back to Best Advent Ever.
We're slowing down to the speed of joy. How are we doing that? In lots of ways. But what is the one way that will drive those many, many other ways that we discover the speed of joy? The Sabbath. We're learning about the Sabbath. We're learning to have this weekly sabbatical, this sacred time, this time set apart, not by us, by God, divinely appointed sabbatical for you each week. We're learning to take advantage of that mini sabbatical. We're learning how to do nothing. We're learning how to do things with great intentionality. And we're learning about leisure. What is leisure? Pieper provides the answer. Leisure is an attitude of the mind and a condition of the soul that fosters a capacity to receive the reality of the world. Think about that, capacity to receive the reality of the world. Wow. How often do we turn away from the reality of a situation because it is just too much? We can't handle it. How often do we meet people who are in complete denial of reality in some aspect of their lives? Leisure gifts us with the capacity to receive the reality of the world, a condition of the mind, a condition of the soul. And so one of the things that occurs to me is that we need to ask God for this condition of the soul. If leisure is a condition of the soul, we need to ask God and plead with God, "Lord, give us leisure. Give us this condition of the soul so that we can fully immerse ourselves in leisure opportunities, so that we can fully immerse ourselves in the Sabbath experience." Josef Pieper offers us a road back from the insanity of our culture. And that road back is leisure, authentic leisure, not just a break from work so you can go back to work and work harder than ever. The examples of leisure that Pieper celebrated and practiced himself were contemplation, philosophical reflection, celebration, worship, the arts and aesthetic appreciation, true rest, play, and the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. You think about those things, and maybe you look at that, and you think, "Oh." Contemplation, philosophical reflection, celebration, maybe you think, "Oh, no, I don't even know what that is." But these are the things we're doing. These are the things we're doing right now. Best Advent Ever is contemplation. We're contemplating these great ideas. It is a philosophical reflection. We are reflecting on the genius of these philosophical ideas that lead us to the heart of God, lead us to the genius of the Sabbath. Celebration. This is a celebration. Worship. Appreciation. Pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. This is pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. But the last thing - we mentioned it briefly the other day - for people, the highest form of leisure was religious worship. And the ultimate good in life was union with God. Think about that again. For people, the highest form of leisure was religious worship. And the ultimate good in life was union with God. Some people will say, "Oh, well, I'm spiritual, but I'm not religious." Some people, many Christians, will say, "Yeah, I'm spiritual, but I'm not religious." And what they forget and what we too often don't emphasize is that Jesus was a deeply religious man. In His humanity, He was a deeply religious man. In the context of His Judaism, He wasn't a vague spiritual guru. No, He was a deeply religious man committed to the disciplines and practice of His religion.
And our religion, what a gift it is. It's not something we should shy away from. It's not something we should ever be ashamed of. It's something we should run towards. It's something we should embrace. Dynamic Catholic, we're constantly helping people to embrace this reality. I want you to join our team, become a member of the Ambassador's Club today.
