Welcome back to Best Advent Ever. We're working on building these adoration chapels, and one of the things I think about is that these adoration chapels provide a mighty source of peace in people's lives. Just like we're talking about leisure, is a mighty source of peace. You look around the world and very often look in the mirror and into our own hearts, and we see that we are stressed, and we are anxious, and we are overwhelmed. And the question becomes, how are we going to deal with all of that? The Sabbath is an invitation from God. Sabbath is a mighty source of peace. Leisure is a mighty source of peace. We're talking about designing our Sundays so they can be a mighty source of peace. When it comes to designing your Sunday experience, I'm not going to give you a list of do's and don'ts, but I am going to give you two brief thoughts to consider. You will want to get the most out of your mini sabbaticals. And that's the first mistake. This is the way we approach almost everything in our lives. It comes from the cult of efficiency. Our life outside of work and certainly the Sabbath shouldn't be approached the same way we approach work. So it's not about getting the most out of the Sabbath. It's about allowing the Sabbath to serve you however God wants it to serve you, and embracing the Sabbath as a way to serve God and to worship God. Don't try to do too much. Don't cram too much into your sabbatical plans. Your capacity is far, far less than you think. We've all made the mistake of-- all made the mistake of planning a day or a week or a month or a year. And we think we're going to get all of these things done, and then we get a fraction of them done, or half of them done, or 80% of them done. But our capacity is far less than we think it is. And one of the reasons is because of God's holy interruptions. It's because of the inevitable, unexpected that we don't take into account in our plans. I promised you two brief thoughts. Here is the second. Learn to say no. First, learn to say no to yourself. If you say yes to yourself all the time, sooner or later, your life will be miserable. And learn to say no to other people. You don't have to accept every invitation you receive. Three weeks from now, will anybody know or care if you weren't there? Learning to say no. Learning to say no to ourselves. Learning to say no to other people. Because the reality is unlimited options For almost every moment of your life, and the doing can do us in if we're not careful.
Leonardo da Vinci, born in Italy in 1452—painter, sculptor, architect, musician, engineer, mathematician, and scientist. He's an incredible human being. Unquestionably one of the greatest intellects in human history. This was his advice. Every now and then, go away. Have a little relaxation. For when you come back to your work, your judgment will be surer. Since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgment, go some distance away because the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and a lack of harmony or proportion is more readily seen. Take a break. Take the Sabbath. Receive the Sabbath.
I love this phrase. You will lose power of judgment. We make bad decisions when we're overwhelmed. We make bad decisions when we're too busy. We make bad decisions. We lose our power of judgment when we're too busy, when we're living life too quickly. So what's Da Vinci saying? He's saying step back, just like with an artwork. Step back, see what you're doing. Why? Because he says, if you've got a lack of harmony or a lack of proportion, it's easier to see if you step back from it.
How often in our lives do we have a lack of harmony in our lives? How often in our lives do we have a lack of proportion? But we don't step back, so we don't see it. We keep living in the chaos. We keep living in the insanity. And so the genius of our faith, the invitation of our God, the gift of our God, is to take this mini sabbatical each week to step back and to see our life. Is it in proportion? Is it out of proportion? Make adjustments. Realign ourselves with the will of God.
