Gospel

Mt 22:34-40

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad´ducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.”

The Whole Heart Question

Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where each day we're looking for a word, a phrase, or an idea from today's Gospel to anchor our day in the life and teachings of Jesus. Today's reading comes from the Gospel of Matthew 22:34-40. "But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question to test Him. 'Teacher, which is the greatest of the Commandments?' And he said to Him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with your whole mind. This is the first and the greatest of the Commandments. And the second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments, rest the whole law and all the prophets.'"

What jumps out at you today? I'm always struck by the repeating words, your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul. When was the last time you did something wholeheartedly? The last time you did something wholeheartedly, you threw your whole self into something. It's interesting that we do a lot of things in a half-hearted way. Now some things that doesn't matter; right? If you do your errands in a half-hearted way, or if you do many things in your life in a half-hearted way, it doesn't matter.

But the question is, is that, are we doing anything wholeheartedly? Are we doing the most important things wholeheartedly? What in your life at this time is God calling you to do wholeheartedly? Are you doing it wholeheartedly? Are you rejecting the invitation to do it wholeheartedly? Are you resistant to doing it wholeheartedly? And if so, why? And maybe today is an invitation to throw yourself whole-heartedly into whatever God is calling you to do wholeheartedly.

Have an amazing day, and remember, don't just be yourself. Be the very best version of yourself, all that God created you to be.
