Lk 9:18-22
Now it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, “Who do the people say that I am?” And they answered, “John the Baptist; but others say, Eli′jah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen.” And he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, saying, “The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

The Promise of Suffering
What is it that jumps out at you today? Is there a word or a phrase or an idea? It's an epic reading, right? Jesus asking, "Who do you say that I am?" And I think it's a question we all need to reflect upon from time to time. Who do you say that Jesus is? Of course, Peter steps up. The thing that strikes me or jumps out at me today is Jesus says, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and priests and scribes."
What are you suffering at the moment? Who is rejecting you at the moment? And how do you see that? What lens do you use to examine that? Whatever it is you're suffering, are you able to unite that suffering with Jesus and His suffering? Whoever it is you've been rejected by, are you able to recognize that even Jesus was rejected over and over and over again? And there is something about human beings that we seem to continue to cause each other to suffer. And we seem to continue to reject people for every reason under the sun and for no reason at all. Most of all, are you able to see your suffering and your rejection as Jesus keeping His promise? He promised us. I'll be rejected. I'll suffer. You'll be rejected. You'll suffer. But I think when the rejection comes, when the suffering comes, I find it hard to see that through the lens of the gospel. I find it hard. It requires effort. I have to try to see it through the lens of the gospel and to see the rejection and the suffering as part of Jesus' promise to me. Maybe something completely different jumped out at you. That's okay. Have a great day and remember, Be Bold, Be Catholic.
