Fear the Right Thing

4 min

Gospel

Mt 10:26-33

“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father’s will. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

It’s time to take back your life.

It’s time to slow down to the speed of joy.

All revolutions have a moment when they begin. This is your moment.

Fear the Right Thing

Is there a word or a phrase or an idea that jumps out at you today?

Jesus starts talking about fear and what to fear, what not to fear. And like so many things, you know, we fear the wrong things. And I think we're not fearful enough of losing our souls. Maybe that's a pendulum swinging too far in the other direction from ages where people were obsessed with it in a way that was perhaps unhealthy. I can't actually lose my soul. I can't actually. It's possible.

In the three ordinary voices of God, I start by pointing out that it's possible to mislive our lives. We never talk about it, but it is possible to mislive our lives, to live our lives poorly. We talk about people, think about ourselves. Very rarely do we think of, oh, I might be misliving my life. I might be misliving this aspect of my life or that aspect of my life. Life. The reason I bring that up is because losing our soul in the way that Jesus describes in today's reading is just an extension of that, right?

If we mislive this moment of our life, or this day of our life, and then tomorrow we mislive that day of our life, and then the day after that, and for weeks and months, we keep misliving our lives, the reality is we will lose our soul. Exactly the same way that Jesus is describing here. And so, for me, two things I take from today: one, you can lose your soul. Keep it in mind. Two, it's possible to mislive your life in little bits here and there, but the little bits can start to add up and get you down a wrong path real fast. And it's It's good to be aware of that. But each of us trying to listen to the voice of God, what was your word? What phrase? What was your idea? And how are you going to take it out into the world today and allow it to inform whatever it is you do? Your work, your relationships, your friendships, whatever it is you do, whoever it is you encounter, how are you going to let the word the phrase the idea that God used to speak to you today? Inform all of those actions and activities. Have a great day, and remember, Be bold. Be Catholic.
