We live in an on-demand world, a world built for speed, fast cars, instant messages, same-day delivery. That's why it's so difficult when we have to wait. Is waiting a waste of time? When you are forced to wait, do you feel your life is being disrupted? Or do you view delays as divine direction? When life slows you down, do you see that as an invitation? The answers to these questions are not found in our mind, but in our behavior. We avoid waiting. We try to control it. We fill it with distractions. We get frustrated. We treat waiting like it's a waste of our time, a waste of our life. Sarah, the wife of Abraham, had been waiting for years. She had been waiting so long that she had lost hope. Years earlier, she had overheard God speaking to Abraham, promising that she would get pregnant and give birth to a son. The idea was so unbelievable to her that she laughed. After all, Sarah was already an elderly woman, and she had hoped and waited for a child for her entire life. Years passed. Sarah grew even older, and then a miracle. In God's perfect timing, Sarah gave birth to Isaac. She was 90 years old. Even though there were moments when Sarah thought her waiting meant she was disqualified from God's blessings. That wasn't true. The waiting prepared her for what was to come.
The name Isaac means he laughs. This name forever tied Sarah's doubt to God's faithfulness. What once sounded impossible became the very evidence of God's power. Her laughter was transformed from disbelief into joy. Are you waiting for something? Are you waiting for something right now? What is the state of your heart as you wait? If you knew when the wait would be over, how would you live your life in the meantime? Would your frustration, anger, and resentment evaporate? Would you rush less, pray more, work toward a new goal, trust more deeply? Too often, we assume God has forgotten us. We mistakenly think that timing of our lives doesn't matter to him, but nothing could be further from the truth. The beginning of the Gospel of Matthew describes the 42 generations that led to the birth of Jesus Christ. Each birth was a miracle. Each birth is a miracle. And God's timing is a miracle. Your life is the same. Your existence is not accidental. Your timing is not random. You were born into this moment on purpose. During seasons of waiting, it's tempting to feel forgotten and to wonder if God has paused His work in our lives. But God is always at work within our lives. Think about your life. Reflect on all the seemingly chance encounters, random events, and serendipitous opportunities. God is always at work in your life. God is always at work. In the world, He's always at work in your life, in my life. He is present in our waiting. Proverbs tells us trust in the Lord with all your heart and wait patiently on the Lord in every situation. Don't resent your waiting. Let your waiting refine you. Think about that. Don't resent your waiting. Let your waiting refine you.
Trust, surrender, believe, receive.
Do you believe in miracles? You are a miracle.
So what is today's lesson? Waiting is not a waste of time. It is often when God is most profoundly at work. Like Sarah, we may feel forgotten, but God's timing is always precise and purposeful. Even when nothing seems to be happening, God is ordering our lives. He's constantly refining our hearts with the same care and concern he employs to sustain the universe. Trust that He is present and active, even when His ways are hidden. And what is the virtue of the day? Patience. Patience is the ability to endure waiting with hope and without complaint. It is a trust in God's timing and a surrender to His will. Patience teaches us to rest in God's love and providence, even when the future is unclear. Waiting teaches us the virtue of patience.
