Life doesn't unfold the way we expect it to. Most of us imagine our lives unfolding in a clear, understandable way, one chapter logically leading to the next. But life doesn't work that way. Events don't announce themselves in advance. Twists in the story arrive without warning. New people enter our lives when we least expect it. Life comes at us in unfamiliar sequences, reminding us that it is often unpredictable and messy. That's exactly the way Joseph's life unfolded. He had no idea God was weaving an extraordinary story. It's hard to recognize God's work in the moment.
Joseph was one of Jacob's 12 sons. He was Jacob's 11th son, but he was his father's favorite. Jacob had a special tenderness for Joseph. Jacob openly displayed his favoritism, and this fueled Joseph's brother's resentment toward him. This favoritism was famously displayed when Jacob gave Joseph a long, ornate, multicolored robe. As the years passed, Joseph's brothers grew in jealousy and hatred toward him.
Joseph was only 17 when he began having vivid dreams that hinted at a future leadership role. In one of his dreams, he was working in the fields with his brothers. And his bundle of grain stood upright while the others bowed down. In another dream, Joseph watched as the sun, the moon, and 11 stars bowed down to him. These dreams were too much for Joseph's brothers. When the opportunity presented itself, they tricked Joseph and sold him into slavery.
Joseph became a well-respected slave in the household of an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh. The officer's wife took a liking to Joseph and tried to seduce him. When Joseph rejected her, she lied and said that he tried to assault her. The officer promptly threw Joseph into prison. Joseph was imprisoned with the butler and the baker of the Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. One morning, both men spoke of troubling dreams. They were distressed, and they had no one to interpret their dreams. Joseph noticed their sadness and offered to help.
The butler told Joseph his dream, "In my dream, there was a vine with three branches that bloomed with grapes. I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup." Joseph listened prayerfully and gave his interpretation. "The three branches are three days. Within three days, Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office. When you are freed, please remember me and help me get out of prison." Three days later, everything happened exactly as Joseph had predicted. But even though the butler was freed, he forgot about Joseph. Time passed, and Joseph seemed to be hopelessly stuck again. Two years later, Joseph was suddenly called from prison. Pharaoh had a dream that no one could interpret. It was then that the butler remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh how he had interpreted his dream in prison. After listening prayerfully to Pharaoh's dream, Joseph explained that the dreams foretold seven years of abundance, followed by seven years of famine. The pharaoh was absolutely amazed. He put Joseph in charge of the crops of Egypt, and it all took place just as Joseph said it would. Years later, the famine drove Joseph's brothers to Egypt. They bowed before him, not knowing who he was. The dreams God gave Joseph as a teenager were fulfilled in breathtaking detail. But the greatest miracle was what happened next. When Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, he did not seek revenge. Instead, he said to them, "I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. Do not be distressed, for God sent me before you to preserve life." At nearly 40 years old, Joseph was reunited with his family after years of suffering. What once seemed like a series of cruel and disconnected events was revealed to be one carefully written story. When life doesn't make sense, it can be difficult to believe that God is present, that He is good, that He cares, that He is doing anything meaningful at all. Some chapters of our lives hurt so deeply that we wonder if they will ever resolve. But if Joseph's story teaches us anything, it is this, God is always writing a greater story than the one we see. Every betrayal, every injustice, every forgotten prayer was woven into a purpose Joseph could not yet understand. What looked like chaos was preparation. What felt like abandonment was positioning. This is how God works. "In all things, God works for the good of those who love Him," Paul tells us in Romans. Some chapters of the story are long, some are painful, some are short, some are messy, some are confusing, but none of the chapters of our lives are meaningless. Does your story make sense right now? Maybe it doesn't. But one day, you will look back with a clarity that you cannot imagine today. What feels confusing, delayed, or unfair may one day reveal itself as essential to the story God is writing with your life. Our lives are full of miracles. No matter what you are facing today, take heart. The same God of miracles who guided Joseph's story is guiding yours.
Trust, surrender, believe, receive. Your greatest ability is your availability.
So what is today's lesson? God is writing an incredible story with your life, even when the current chapter doesn't make sense. What feels like a setback may be setting the stage for something greater. You don't need to see the whole story to trust the author. And what is the virtue of the day? Perseverance. Perseverance teaches us to resolve difficulties. Acquiring this virtue requires both grace and significant personal effort. Perseverance is remaining faithful when the story unfolds more slowly or painfully than you expected. It is choosing to keep trusting God's plan, even when you do not yet understand your place in it.
