You're awesome.
Do you believe in miracles? Miracles are present.
I miss it.
Transformative.
Possible.
You are a miracle.
Are you paying attention? You don't want to miss the invitation on offer in today's miracle. It has the power to absolutely change your life. Moses was not looking for a miracle when one came his way. He was tending his sheep. This man would go on to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, receive the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, work many wonders by God's grace, and become one of the most significant figures in the Bible. But where does it all begin? One day, Moses was living in exile as a shepherd, and it was there in the middle of his ordinary day as he led his sheep across the top of Mount Sinai, that God caught Moses' attention. Moses noticed a bush that was on fire, but not consumed. Flames danced, but the branches were not reduced to ash. The fire burned without destroying. That alone was a miracle. But God was doing more than suspending the laws of nature. He was teaching Moses and teaching us how He works. The miracle of the burning bush reveals something essential about God. He is always trying to get our attention, not to frighten us, not to overwhelm us, but to invite us into conversation. God could have shouted Moses' name from the heavens. He could have sent angels. He could have shaken the earth. Instead, he used a burning bush. Why? Well, love is creative. Love is creative. It's always looking for new ways to express itself. God is love, the Father of creativity, and He delights in speaking with His children. Perhaps that's why He used the burning bush.
Scripture tells us that when the Lord saw Moses turn aside to look, God called to him from the bush. There's a profound lesson here. God spoke when Moses noticed. How many burning bushes have we walked past because we were too busy, too distracted, too preoccupied to turn aside and to turn our attention to God? God is constantly trying to get our attention. Once Moses turns aside, God speaks His name, "Moses, Moses." This is not a generic announcement. It's a deeply personal call. God knows him, sees him, calls Moses by name, and then God does something even more astonishing than lighting a bush on fire. He speaks into Moses' life. This is the first miracle of ordinary life revealed in the burning bush. God wants to speak into our lives. He wants to speak into our lives. And then God does something that unsettles Moses completely. He gives him a mission. He gives him a mission. He says, "Go, I am sending you." This is the second miracle of ordinary life revealed in the burning bush. When When we listen, God reveals who we were made to be and the mission of our lives. When our hearts are set on fire with God's love, we do not burn out. We burn bright. We become beacons of God's presence in this world. Your ordinary life, your work, your family, your struggles, your questions can become holy ground when you recognize God's presence and respond to His invitation. The miracle of the burning bush is not locked in the past. It's unfolding all around us every day. God is still trying to get our attention. God is trying to get your attention. God is still speaking. God is speaking to you. God is still calling people to mission. God is calling you to mission. The question is simple, and it is the same question Moses faced, will you turn aside and look?
Trust.
Surrender.
Believe.
Receive.
God doesn't need your strength.
He wants your surrender.
So what is today's lesson? God is always speaking, but we are often distracted by the cares of this world. Slow down. Pay attention. Turn aside. If you are not hearing God's voice, don't assume he is silent. Ask whether you have created space to listen. Silence is not a luxury of the spiritual life. It is essential. And what is today's virtue? Attentiveness. The virtue of attentiveness is a sign of care for others and care for the soul, which is an immeasurable gift from God. Attentive people notice things inside themselves, in the situations and circumstances of daily life, and in other people. Attentiveness trains the heart to listen, the eyes to see, and the soul to respond. All this is achieved by first being attentive to God. I've got an amazing announcement for you today.
