The truths about some miracles are easy to deliver and easy to receive. This isn't one of them. Let's begin with the story itself. The splitting of the Red Sea is one of the most epic miracles in human history. The Israelites had just been freed from slavery in Egypt. But after their release, Pharaoh changed his mind and set off in pursuit of them with his army. In a dramatic moment of fear and trembling, the Israelites can see the army approaching. But then God speaks to Moses. He says, "Tell the people of Israel to go forward. Lift up your rod and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go on dry ground through the sea." Can you imagine? But that's exactly what Moses does. He stretches out his hand, and an incredible wind comes and splits the water. The Israelites cross on dry land, and the Egyptian army follows from a distance. But when the Israelites reach the other side safely, God has another command. He tells Moses to extend his hand again, this time to close the sea, washing Pharaoh and the entire army away. The Israelites were saved. They got to see the wonders of God. They had the privilege of doing the impossible. But here's the difficult truth. This earth-shattering miracle was only possible because of one thing: obedience.
Obedience is the doorway to the miraculous. Obedience unlocks amazing possibilities in our lives. Obedience fills our lives with wonders and grace. When we listen deeply and obey God's call, even in the smallest things, we open ourselves to the extraordinary way God transforms the ordinary events of our lives. And this is the truth that's hard to accept. Why? Because the moment we hear the word obedience, we tend to clam up. We're allergic to the concept. It seems we are obedient only to our own desires. Addicted to comfort and convenience, we reject the notion of obedience. No wonder we have such a hard time surrendering an obedience to the will of God.
The word obedience comes from a Latin word, which means to listen deeply. Moses listened deeply. The Israelites sometimes listened deeply. But listening deeply, they saw the wisdom and wonders of God's way. But that doesn't mean it was easy to cross the Red Sea. God said to do it, but that doesn't mean it was easy. Moses listened, the Israelites followed, and the result was one of the greatest miracles in human history. What is God saying to you right now at this time in your life? And what stops you from listening? What fears, anxieties, people, demands, or circumstances make it hard for you to follow what God says? And how would your life be different if you obeyed all of God's commands? Obedience often requires stepping into the unknown. You may be standing on the edge of your own Red Sea right now. You may be facing a situation that feels overwhelming and uncertain, even terrifying. Maybe God is calling you to do something that requires you to abandon what is comfortable. But the miraculous begins to unfold when obedience wins over fear. With this inspiration in mind, let's take a moment and pause now, and let's pray together. Lord, Moses, and the Israelites stood before the Red Sea, I find myself facing a difficult path. Give me the courage to obey you, even when fear surrounds me.
Give me the trust to follow you, even when I cannot see what lies ahead. Help me to hear your voice more clearly and respond with a willing heart. Teach me to have patience when I feel tempted to give up or turn away from the path. You have asked me to walk. Teach me to recognize that your guidance protects me from the pitfalls of my own plans and leads me toward the miracles, wonders, and graces. You have planned for me from the beginning of time. Amen.
Trust, surrender, believe, receive. Do you believe in miracles? You are a miracle.
So what is today's lesson? The path to the miraculous is obedience. When we listen deeply and obey God's commands, even the impossible becomes possible. Trust does not come first. It grows from obedience. The more you obey, the more you trust. The more you trust, the more you experience God's miracles, wonders, and grace. And what is the virtue of the day? Obedience. The virtue of obedience is simply doing what God asks, even when you would prefer to do something else or think there is a better way.
Obedience to God and obedience to a virtue-seeking earthly authority are both profound blessings that liberate the soul and make peaceful acceptance possible.
