You're awesome.
Do you believe in miracles?
Miracles are present.
Amazing.
Transformative.
Possible.
You are a miracle.
Today's miracle happens every day. You have the opportunity to participate in this miracle every single day of your life. What do you do on any day that is more important than participating in a miracle of the Mass? We've been talking about miracles, wonders, and grace for 28 days. One more breathtaking than the next. But the Last Supper? It's different. Here we find a miracle that isn't limited to one moment in time and space. Jesus designed this miracle specifically for us to enter into. For 2,000 years, Catholic Christians across cultures, continents, and centuries have been participating in this miracle. Each time, every time, Jesus steps into the world again. The miracle is the Eucharist. On the night before He died, Jesus gathered His disciples in the upper room. The mood must have been heavy, even if the disciples did not fully understand why. There was bread and wine on the table. The familiar rhythms of the Passover meal were set in motion. And yet, this night was different. Something unprecedented was about to happen. Jesus took bread. He blessed it. He broke it and then spoke the words that have been spoken by every priest in persona Christi at every Mass, every day ever since, transforming bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. "Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me." In that moment, Jesus instituted the Eucharist, and history was forever altered.
Let me ask you a question. What are the 10 most significant moments in history? There are many ways to answer this question, but most people, well, most people won't even get close. The average person would say World War I, World War II, the American Revolution, the moon landing, September 11, civil rights movement, the invention of the internet, fall of the Berlin War, the collapse of communism, the end of the Cold War, COVID-19 pandemic, the Declaration of Independence, the atomic bomb. Scholars would say the Agricultural Revolution, invention of writing, the first legal codes, classical philosophy and democracy, the printing press, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, World War II, and the Digital and Information Revolution. These are all huge moments. They changed the course of human history, but Jesus only had to wake up one morning and get out of bed, and that was a more significant in history than any of these. And you might notice these events are missing from both lists. Creation, the fall, the call of Abraham, Exodus, the incarnation, the Last Supper, the crucifixion, the Resurrection, and Pentecost, the birth of the Church. The Last Supper will be missing from most people's lists. And yet, if you remove it from human history, everything changes. The institution of the Eucharist changed everything. And the Eucharist continues to change everything. Every moment of Jesus' life was a miracle. Every breath he drew, each step he took along the dusty roads of Galilee, each conversation he had. All of these were astounding moments of divine grace, but the institution of the Eucharist is on another level. The Last Supper gives us a way to connect to Jesus' life and teachings, His sacrifice, His love, and His grace, not just once, but every day. This is why the Mass itself is a miracle. Every Mass provides an access point to God's infinite grace for you and for me. Heaven and earth meet in the Mass. The sacrifice of Calvary is made present in the Mass, not repeated, but represented. The same Jesus, who offered Himself on the cross, offers Himself to you under the appearance of bread and wine in every Mass. There is nothing boring or routine about the Mass.
At every Mass, God makes Himself radically available to you. The Creator of the universe makes Himself available to nourish and strengthen you and to heal us and to reorder our hearts with His love. The Eucharist is the most direct access point to grace we have in this world. Are you taking advantage of it?
Trust.
Surrender.
Believe.
Receive.
Don't let the world steal your wonder.
In today's lesson, this miracle is the Eucharist. This miracle happens every day. You have the opportunity to participate in this miracle every day. What do you do on any day that is more important than participating in the miracle of the Mass? Let's think about that. The Last Supper gives us a way to connect to Jesus' life and teachings. His sacrifice, His love, His grace, not just once, but every day. This is why the Mass itself is a miracle. Every Mass provides an access point to God's infinite grace. In today's virtue devotion. The virtue of devotion consists of loyal, loving, consistent, and enthusiastic desire to please God in all things. It is a specifically religious act chosen deliberately and freely and directed toward God. Who or what would an outside observer deduce you are devoted to? Too many people misplace their devotion. Be careful not to misplace yours. To give something that belongs to God to anyone or anything else is a grave disorder. Today, I want to invite you to check out The Stations of the Eucharist.
