Everything great in human history has been brought into the world by people who had the courage to dream and the tenacity to chase down those dreams and make them a reality. One of the most astonishing abilities we have as human beings is our ability to dream. Not the drifting, unconscious dreams of sleep, but the deliberate, courageous act of imagining a future that doesn't currently exist, human beings alone possess this remarkable capacity. We can step out of the present moment, travel forward in our minds, picture something beautiful, meaningful, and better, and then return to the present moment to begin to work to make that imagined future real. But it is sad how unemployed this gift is.
Most people have stopped dreaming for one reason or another. Animals live almost entirely in the present. They respond to instinct, environment, and immediate need. Human beings, by contrast, live simultaneously in three dimensions of time. We remember the past, we inhabit the present. This third dimension, the future, is where hope is born. It is where progress begins. It is where human dignity expresses itself most fully. And of course, the ultimate dream, the ultimate future is eternity with God. You have dreams. They were placed deep in your soul by God, and your dreams are yours for a reason. They are part of your journey. Every great achievement in human history began as a dream in someone's mind.
Before there were cathedrals, someone imagined stone reaching toward heaven. Before there were symphonies, someone heard music no one else could yet hear. Before there were movements for justice, someone dared to imagine a world that treated human beings with greater dignity and compassion. Dreaming is not escapism. It is not denial of reality. True dreaming requires a deep engagement with reality. It begins with an honest assessment of what is broken, what is unfinished, what is possible. It asks bold questions. What's missing? What could be better? What is my part? What could be that is not yet?
But the true genius of the human person is not only the ability to imagine a better future, it is the ability to return to the present and work to bring about that future. Dreams alone change nothing. But dreams harnessed by discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance can change everything. This is where human greatness reveals itself. We imagine something beautiful. Then we submit ourselves to the slow, often unglamorous process of becoming the kind of person capable of bringing it to life. We work, we learn, we practice, we fail, we pray, we adjust. We show up again the next day, and the next, and the next. Dreams animate us. They breathe life into us in new and different ways.
This capacity to dream and build is not limited to inventors and artists and entrepreneurs. Parents dream of a better life for their children. And they give themselves daily to love, provision, and guidance. Teachers imagine awakened minds and then labor patiently in classrooms. Ordinary people dream of healing, reconciliation, or growth, and then take one courageous step at a time toward that future. Every personal transformation begins this way. No one becomes wiser, healthier, or more loving by accident. Change begins when a person imagines a better version of themselves and then chooses to act in alignment with that vision, especially when it is inconvenient or uncomfortable.
Dreaming also protects us from despair. When circumstances are difficult, the ability to imagine a future beyond present suffering keeps the human spirit alive. Hope is not naive optimism. It is disciplined imagination anchored in action. It is the conviction that tomorrow can be shaped by what we do today. And perhaps most remarkably, our capacity to dream reveals something profound about who we are. We are not merely creatures reacting to the world. We can collaborate with God to create within it. We are invited to participate in shaping the future, not just for ourselves, but for others. To dream, to imagine, to return to the present, and to work faithfully. This is one of the most sacred patterns of human life. When we forget how to dream, we shrink. When we dream without working, we drift. But when we dare to imagine something amazing and then commit ourselves to making it real, we step fully into the dignity of being a human being. And the world is changed one dream at a time.
Trust. Surrender.
Believe.
Receive. Don't let the world steal your wonder.
In today's lesson, God gave you the ability to dream. And your dreams are your dreams for a reason. What are your dreams? And what are you going to do about them? God has incredible dreams for your life. Too many to count. But God's greatest dream is to live within you, to abide with you. Can you think of any greater miracle? The God of the entire universe loves you and dreams of being with you. And today's virtue, longnaminity. Longnaminity means longness of the soul. This virtue gives us the strength to wait for God and the unfolding of His dream for our lives. It's the strength to bear trials without becoming disturbed, allowing us to advance toward higher goals. It is steadfastness in faith and a gift of the Holy Spirit.
