Have you begun to see miracles in your life? As we reach the end of the second week of this journey, I sincerely hope that your eyes have been opened and your hearts have been filled with wonder at God's infinite and intimate goodness. But today, God issues a warning. And that warning, harden not your hearts. A capacity to ignore miracles is staggering. And yet, if we're honest, it's also completely expected. The Israelites had spent hundreds of years in slavery in Egypt. Generation after generation knew nothing but oppression, fear, and exhaustion. They cried out to God, and God heard their cry. He raised up Moses. He unleashed the 10 plagues. He parted the Red Sea. He led them through the dry ground. He destroyed the pursuing army. He turned bitter water sweet. He reigned manor down from heaven. And then, just six weeks later, they doubted him and questioned his goodness. Six weeks. When God led them to a waterless camp in the wilderness, they complained and quarreled with Moses. They accused him, and then they accused God. It is astonishing. But it is also familiar how quickly we forget. This is not just the story of Israel. It is the story of the human heart. God instructs Moses to strike the rock, and water pours out enough to satisfy all the people and their animals. It's a miracle. The Israelites had every reason to trust God. They had seen more miracles in six weeks than most people see in a lifetime. And yet, when discomfort arrived, trust evaporated, fear overtook, and their hearts hardened.
This is why Psalm 95 pleads with us, "Oh, that today you would listen to his voice, do not harden your hearts." Hardened hearts don't usually happen overnight. They form gradually through disappointment, impatience, entitlement, fear. They form when we focus more on what we lack than on what we have been given. Hardened hearts form when we demand certainty instead of choosing trust. What part of your heart has become hardened over time? Sometimes God leads us into the wilderness, not to punish us but to invite us to trust Him more fully. The wilderness strips away illusions of control. It exposes what we rely on. It reveals what is truly in our hearts. In the wilderness, there are no distractions, no access, no shortcuts. There is only need and God. What wilderness has God led you into at this time in your life? Water from the rock reminds us that God can bring life out of the hardest places. He can bring hope out of despair. He can bring renewal out of exhaustion. But the miracle is not just the water. The deeper miracle is learning to trust before the water comes. Every day, we face a choice. We can harden our hearts, or we can soften them. We can rehearse our fears, or remember God's faithfulness. We can complain, or we can trust. We will find ourselves in another wilderness soon enough. That much is certain. It's just part of the human experience. The question is, what will it do to our hearts? Will it harden them? Or will it open them to deeper trust? Today, if you hear the voice of God, do not harden your heart.
Trust.
Surrender.
Believe.
Receive.
Don't let the world steal your wonder.
So what is today's lesson? A hardened heart forgets God's faithfulness. A softened heart trusts him even in the wilderness. And today's virtue, trust. The virtue of trust is, in many ways, an acknowledgement of the reality that God is in control. It is also a belief that God has a plan for our lives and will provide for us in that plan, especially when things are difficult or unclear. One of the most practical ways to grow in the virtue of trust is to become more trustworthy. Trust determines how we participate in relationships. Who we trust reveals our character. The gift of trust is a tranquil soul.
