If this miracle hadn't happened, you may never have been born. The Battle of Lepanto is one of the most famous military battles in history. Tensions had been building between the Holy League and the Muslim Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans, renowned for their vast empire and powerful navy, were unstoppable. Their goal was to expand their control into the Western Mediterranean, threatening to topple Europe and completely eradicate Christianity. And they were on their way. They were well and truly on their way.
At the time, the Ottoman navy was considered the most advanced and feared fighting force in the world. They had already conquered Constantinople, dominated much of the Eastern Mediterranean, and crushed nearly every major navy opponent they encountered. By every conventional measure of warfare, the Holy League shouldn't have had a chance. Pope Pius V understood the fate of Western civilization was at stake. He knew victory for the Christians would be nearly impossible, but he also knew it would be a spiritual battle as much as a military battle. This inspired a new strategy. The Pope gave a single command, pray the rosary, and the people did. They prayed like they had never prayed before.
On the eve of the battle, the men of the Holy League prepared their souls by falling to their knees and praying the rosary. The two opposing fleets made up of 478 ships converged in the Bay of Lepanto, off the coast of Greece. The Christians were vastly outnumbered. All hope seemed lost. Even the wind was set against them. Then just before the battle began, the wind suddenly shifted. Miraculously, it turned in their favor, filled the sails of the Christian ships and hurled them toward the Ottoman fleet. The shifting breeze threw the Ottoman ships into confusion and their advance was disrupted. This changed everything, quite literally turning the tide of the battle. War is a horrible thing. Thousands of men fought fiercely on both sides and the casualties were devastating. 30,000 Ottoman soldiers and 7,000 Christian soldiers were killed or wounded. But by the end of the day, the Holy League had won a stunning victory.
The world tilted in that moment. It was a miracle, a clear sign of divine intervention through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. In gratitude, Pope Pius V established the Feast of Our Lady of Victory. The Battle of Lepanto halted the Ottoman expansion into the West. That single fact changed history. Italy and Europe were saved, and the Judeo-Christian Foundation of Western civilization was preserved. Without this victory, Europe, as we know it, may have collapsed. Without Europe's survival, the founding of America may have never happened. And even if you had still been born, you may never have heard of Christianity. You would be living in an Islamic state, and you would have almost certainly have been raised as a Muslim. This miracle didn't display military might as much as it displayed the power of prayer. What battles are you fighting today? Do they seem impossible? What opposition are you facing? Whatever you're up against, I have a challenge for you. Bring your worries, your fears, and your obstacles to Jesus through Mary by praying the rosary. The rosary is a dynamic prayer because it meets us where we are and it leads us one step closer to God with each encounter. This ancient prayer is ever fresh, ever new, and like a faithful friend, it is patient with us, encourages us to grow, challenges us to change, and comforts us in times of doubt, discouragement, and confusion. There is just something about the rosary that settles our hearts and minds. It puts things in perspective and allows us to see them as they really are. It reaches deep down into our souls and puts us at ease. Creating a peace that is rare and beautiful. The rosary? Well, it just works.
Trust.
Surrender.
Believe.
Receive.
Your greatest ability is your availability.
Today's lesson, prayer reshapes the human heart and through transformed hearts, reshapes the world. It aligns our hearts with truth, steadies our fears, awakens courage, and leads us in the ways of God. Prayer strengthens the weak, clarifies the confused, and opens paths where none seem possible. The rosary is one of the most ancient and powerful forms of prayer at your disposal. History turns when ordinary people entrust impossible moments to God and act with faith born from prayer. Today's virtue, determination. The virtue of determination allows us to focus on a task and see it through to completion. Just keep moving in the direction of your goal or destination. Determination is taking the next step, no matter how small that next step may be. I want to encourage you today to take The Surrender Assessment. This thing is amazing. It is extraordinary.
